History
Marlin Firearms was designed by John M. Marlin who was born in Connecticut in 1836. He worked hard at the Colt plant in Hartford during the Civil War and started to manufacture his own line of revolvers and derringers in 1870. He took a design team, and develops enduring models such as Models 1891 and 1893 which are known as Models 39 and 336 today. These two Marin rifles are very popular and recognized as one of the oldest shoulder arm designs in the world that are still being produced up to now.
When Marlin died in 1901, his two sons took over the business. At first the business stayed in the family and was expanded. It was during the World War I when the business was bought by a New York syndicate bought the company and changed the name into Marlin Rockwell Corporation. It became one of the biggest machine gun makers for the US and its Allies, building the M1895 Colt-Browning machine gun and a later variant called the “Marlin gun”. In 1924, a lawyer name Frank Kenna, bought the business and fortunately stayed in their family name until it was sale to Remington Arms Company in 2007. Prior to that sale, in 2000, Marlin purchased H&R 1871, Inc., which markets using the names Harrington & Richardson and New England Firearms. Freedom Group, Inc. acquired Marlin, Harrington & Richardson, and NEF in January, 2008.
